Review of Roka Akor – Chicago

We stopped in for happy hour and tried a mix of dishes across the menu. The dumplings were the low point of the meal; the wrapper just couldn’t hold up to the moisture of the filling, so the texture fell apart a bit. The fried squid was solid, nicely seasoned and crisp, but not much different from what you’d find at other restaurants.

Where Roka Akor really shines is the robata meats and sushi. The lamb, beef, and chicken skewers were all excellent, perfectly grilled, juicy, and deeply flavorful. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented, the kind that makes you pause before taking a bite.

Overall, the happy hour was a good value and the quality of the meats made it worth the visit. I’d skip the dumplings next time and go straight for the robata grill and sushi bar.
